A filter is an action applied to the schedule that allows you to see whatever information desired for tasks and / or resources while filtering out all unneeded information for the current view or need.
Applying and effectively using filters is a very powerful tool in communication and planning. You can define and limit your view and report information for just about anything. This filtered information allows you or others to focus on specific information relative to them.
Simplicity is the key to communication. You can apply a filter for a task or resource and distribute this information by internet, email or physical distribution.
Microsoft Project has many pre-defined filters that you can use. You can also create your own custom filters.
Our Scheduling Templates and Supporting Manuals provide many custom filters that are useful in the construction industry. You can filter for:
CSI Division #
CSI Code #
Pre-Construction work
Subcontract Work
Any trade or type of work you define (i.e. concrete work, carpentry, etc.)
Your Job #
Your Work Item #
Custom Priorities
Responsibility
Construction Manager
General Contractor
Project Developer
Project Manager
Superintendent
Foreman
Subcontractor
Draftsman
Crew
Anything you define
Etc.
You can use filters for a single project or a group of projects (if they are formatted the same way and using the same fields). You can also use any of these filters to see all tasks associated with them or for tasks within a specified date range.
Through filtering you gain the focus and insight to promote action and responsibility.
